Theres also a character with a mask holding a gun which connotes evil and a villain to the film.

Typography: The 007 uses the same font that the entire James Bond franchise uses to create a sence of familiarity for the franchise fans. No time to die is quite modern looking.

Film poster and representation

A typical male hero in a spy action film: guns, wearing a suit, smart, stealthy, nonchalant.

Explore how the film poster for no time to die uses the following elements of media language to create meaning:
Images. mise en scene, layout and design.

The mise en scene of the females shows that they are all different but have similar meanings. One woman is wearing combat clothing and holding a gun which presents her as a strong female character. This also shows the anti-stereotypical representation of women in the film. The woman below her however is wearing an evening dress and holding a gun, which shows the use of stereotypical clothing but still being used to present her in a powerful way with connotations of independence and strength. And the third woman is in the bottom corner but slightly larger than the other images which could connote she is the love interest but her clothing is modest and sophisticated and she is looking at the camera which connotes power and strength. This shows the representation of women in the poster to have powerful meanings.

Context:
  • Nomi being the new 007 was reported prior to the film released
  • Lynch stated "we black women know how it feels to be underrepresented and i'm hoping that my career and my choice in roles and me just being me authentically is shining a light on our power."
  • Only 3 guns and not threatening in the poster as the ASA states violence shouldn't be glamorised.
Stereotypes: stereotype of action genre is male dominated.

Gender: male- serious, formal, lack of emotion. Female- powerful, modest, varied.

Ethnicity: predominantly white cast- typical for hollywood. In context nomi is there to give a positive side of diversity.

Age: bond is the oldest- most powerful, calm, control, serious. Younger- controlled by bond.

Sexuality: heterosexual stereotypes

Man With The Golden Gun film poster and media analysis

In an older bond film the stereotypes would be:
 women being more objectified
 men only having jobs
a white cast- lack of racial diversity
 insensitive comments

  • Released in 1974, Moores second appearence
  • Created with a budget of $7 million, made $97 million
  • Several kung fu scenes and filmed in Asia
  • Artwork of poster by Robert McGinnis
  • 1973 energy crisis hinted at on the poster with the power plant and energy beam
  • Based on a book by Ian Flemming
It looks boring, the women are very sexualised and fall to his feet, hard to understand the plot.

1. They use a montage of images to show that its an action film by adding in different features of the film

2. They image of bond shows that he is in control and powerful through the direct address and is holding a gun up to prove his power.

3. The connotations of the golden gun is wealth, intimidation, violence and power

4. The text is used to appeal to different audiences because the females in bikinis link to the male gaze theory, the explosion shows there is action which would appeal to both genders.

5. the enigma codes created, the guns for possible gun fights, the golden gun and the mystery of who is behind it, and the car chases.

6. the action and adventure conventions are: explosions, car chase, guns, martial arts with people of a different ethnicity for adventure.

Propp characters in the poster:
The hero- James bond
The villain- person with the gun
The princess- both girls in bikinis

The film poster uses mise-en-scene to create meaning through conveying the conventions of an action film. This can be seen through the guns being used as props. This creates the impression of gun fights and use of weaponry which links to the action genre. It can also be seen through the explosions and the setting of the building that appears to be high tech. This creates the impression of danger and adds to the potential story line within the film, the use of a metallic building connotes to technology and supports the conventions of an action film.

Do Now

1. bond is represented as in control, powerful, confident ✔ serious, calm
2. female representations are sexualised ✔ vulnerable, objectified
3. representations of ethnicity is white cast except for the person doing martial arts
4. representations of age is middle aged or young adults formal, serious
5. propps character types are the hero, villain, and the princess

MWTTG film poster and representation analysis

Connotations of:
Black suit- sophisticated, formal, mature, masculine
Colour gold- wealth, modest, luxury
Power plant- dangerous

Who regulates film? British board of film classification (BBFC)
Who regulates radio? Ofcom
Who regulates games? PEGI
Who regulates newspaper? Independent press standards organisation (IPSO)

Minority ethnic groups stereotypes: to be pitied, to be laughed at, the exotic and/or dangerous.
Society progressing towards racial equality by 1970s
The poster made during the move to gender equality and women's rights in the 1960-70s

Stereotypes:
women in bikinis, men being presented as strong characters (suit), emotionless, the asian women doing martial arts

Representations of gender:
women are objectified, damsel in distress, men presented to be mature and strong

Representations of ethnicity:
asian woman is only presented for ju jitsu or less important roles, white love interests, the other asian character is presented for comedy, makes Asia appear behind the rest of the world in technological development

Representations issues and events:
action, explosions, weapons, global energy crisis

Feminist perspective- male gave theory:
they are in bikinis to look more stereotypically attractive to men and the long hair with curved bodies

The MWTGG film poster represents gender through the sexualisation of women. This can be seen in the image where the two white women are presented in bikinis with their long hair and their makeup done. Which links to the issues at the time of the fight for gender equality from women, however the poster doesn't support this as the women are sexualised and appear to need help from the man (bond).
This contrasts to the film poster of Spy where women are presented as equal to men and in control. This can be seen by the positioning of the woman in the centre of the fame and in front of the two men. This connotes that she is in control which shows more equality and less objectification of women than shown in the MWTGG poster.
